Word of the day: “seminary formation.”

A seminary is a school where men train to become priests. “Formation” is the word used for how that training works. It is not just about learning facts. It is about shaping the whole person: who he is, how he thinks, how he acts, and what he cares about.

It is usually described in four parts:

  • Human formation: building character.
  • Spiritual formation: building a habit of prayer and a close relationship with God.
  • Intellectual formation: studying theology, philosophy, and Scripture.
  • Pastoral formation: learning to serve people, including and especially those who are sick or grieving.
